What is a sleep positioning system?

Sleep positioning systems provide support to keep the user’s body aligned throughout the night. It is important to keep the body aligned for individuals that may be unable to position themselves in order to prevent physical deformities caused by poor posture in bed. Most sleep positioning systems are placed on top of an existing mattress and use specialized pillows, cushioned brackets and other forms of contouring the body to maintain proper alignment throughout the night and/or day.

Who can benefit?

Individuals that would benefit from a sleep positioning system are individuals that have:

  • Postural asymmetries
  • Contractures
  • Scoliosis or any curvature of the spine
  • Pelvic obliquity
  • Spasticity
  • Increased muscle tone
  • Skin integrity issue
  • Any Individual that is unable to adjust their own body when lying in bed

When an individual is unable to adjust their weight or move to be comfortable, they are at an increased risk for many complications such as the ones listed above, due to the increased effects of gravity. When an individual is in a poor position for an extended amount of time, gravity is constantly applying force on the body; if poorly positioned, it could cause skeletal deformities. In order to prevent these unnecessary pains and deformities throughout the night, the individual must be lying in a symmetrical position and have support to prevent any deviation from the proper posture.

Why is it helpful?

Having good posture when in bed will translate to good posture when sitting. Some of the benefits of improving posture are:

  • Increased activity tolerance
  • Increased balance
  • Increased ease of breathing
  • Increased ease of swallowing
  • Decreased pain
  • Decreased skin integrity issues
  • Decreased spasticity
  • Decreased risk of joint dislocation

It is important that individuals who use customized seating throughout the day remain supported while sleeping to prevent any regression of improvements made from their postural seating systems. Night time positioning is an essential part of a 24 hour posture plan since individuals will spend large periods of time in bed. Using a positioning system at night will help improve sleep quality and keep the user comfortable throughout the night.

We are honored to bring our clients the Symmetrisleep system all the way from the U.K. There is nothing else like this revolutionary system. The results are patients sleeping through the night, improved posture outcomes and reduced demand on the caregiver.

Our trained staff is ready to meet by appointment in our Showroom at 9209 W. Bluemound Rd., Milwaukee WI to discuss Symmetrisleep and provide you with a hands-on demonstration.
